More about the route

The route Rolex Middle Sea is called one of the most picturesque.

You bet! After all, as signs of the course is the Stromboli volcano, still active, and two beautiful Islands – Pantelleria and Lampedusa, which, like the aegadian, Aeolian Islands, boat, circle around, avoiding the Sicily. Yachts start and finish in Malta.Yachtsmen are waiting for 600 nautical miles of fascinating travel and a lot of difficult tests.

The Surprises Of The Mediterranean

The main surprise for those who consider the Mediterranean sea to be gentle and «unladylike» is the autumn weather whims that turn an exciting sailing trip into a serious test not for the faint of heart. Storms with violent winds and lightning arrows cutting through the waves alternating with monotonous calm evoking anguish – this is how the Mediterranean meets the brave participants of the Middle Sea Race every year.

Such a surprise «pleased» the team race in 2007, when the boats had to literally break forward through the squalls of wind in 50 knots. And for eleven-meter yachts – it is, to put it mildly, not easy! Of the 65 crews who started in these competitions, only 15 came to the finish line, the rest were forced to return because of technical problems.

Unusual gifts for the Rolex Middle Sea

Get gold, finishing last, managed the Irish crew on the Maxi yacht Dinah in 2012. In this regatta it is possible! After all, the calculation of the results is carried out on the handicap, that is taken into account not only the time for which the vessel has passed the distance, but also the coefficients calculated depending on the type of vessel and its weapons. Thus 6 days 22 hours 23 minutes and 51 seconds at sea brought the Irish victory in the double handed category.

How the clock made the race popular

The large-scale popularity of the regatta, which until 2003 was attended by about two dozen teams, brought the Swiss watchmaker rolex. Since 2003, competitions are held under the auspices of this patron status that
significantly increased the interest of yachtsmen to the regatta. Every year the number of daredevils, eager to measure themselves against the sea, increased. Most of the participants registered in 2014 – 122 teams. Maybe in 2016 the record will be broken.
